Fishing  Trawlers haul a trawl, it’s a funneled fishing net. This fishing net rakes the deep of the sea for several hours and collects everything. It’s deep trawling.
Another variation: two boats haul a trawl. This trawl, with a huge opening collects much more, and more than the third of what it collects other than fish are returned to the sea, but in what condition? Dying, alread dead or atrophied.

Fish and proteins  Proteins are essential for the human body and fish is one source of proteins among many. Proteins can come from animals: meat, fish, eggs, milk and dairy foods, or it can come from vegetables. A combination of cereal and pulses is recommended to provide all the essential amino acids. If you take your protein from different sources, you help to preserve environment.

Aquaculture  Fish-farming needs tons of wild fish to feed the farmed ones. So there are fewer wild fish to nourish people living there. These wild fish are also over-fished and transported to the fish-farm, which needs petrol and produces pollution. The same problems exist when farmed fish has to be transported to stores.
A lot of waste is produced by fish-farming. Plus, these farmed fish are fed many antibiotics, which stay in their bodies and arrive with them on your plate.
They also contribute to the disappearance of some fragile ecosystems.

Consumer or consum’actor?  You are the last link of the food chain. So you get all of what remains in the food you eat, but you’re also the only one who can act. Don’t forget, if you decide to eat some fish, you have to be respectful of our planet, which gives protection to us, and to our descendants.
– Is the species of fish you’re going to buy overfished? If you buy it, are you going to contribute to its disappearance?
– How was this fish caught? If you buy it, do you contribute to the destruction of the deep sea, and do you contribute to the disappearance of other fish?
– How was this fish farmed? Did it live in correct conditions? If you buy it, do you increase pollution?
– When this fish was caught, was it during its reproduction time, was it already an adult, did it get time enough to reproduce?
Before you buy this fish, why not find out from the store’s manager and/or the distributor, about methods of fishing and/or fish-farming?

Labeling According to the European regulations, on the label, you have to see: commercial name of the fish species, fishing or farm-fishing area; production type: sea fishing, river fishing, commercial fish-farming. Be careful, sometimes, one commercial name is available for several fish species or one fish species is sold with different commercial names. On the label, it’s not written what fishing method was used. Perhaps you contribute to destroying the ocean without knowing it. But if you ask for the information, you know, and you can choose,depending your ethics.
